भक्तिवेदांत वर्णाश्रम कॉलेज:

Divine Calling - Divine Blessings

In 1986, as a young new bhakta, I heard Srila Prabhupada’s call from a 1974 morning walk in Vrindavan: “Immediately establish a varnashram college wherever we have a center.” Those words entered my heart inspiring me to take up this mission that has blessed my life in so many ways.

In 2025, forty years later, I write to you from the land of Krishna’s pastimes, with a humble plea – join ISKCON Campus Ministry in building the Bhaktivedanta Varnashram College—a 5-acre beacon of Vedic wisdom that will inspire and bless millions more devotees beginning with you and your family.

The Significance of Varnashram Dharma

What follows is the story of this vital mission, the challenges we've faced, and our shared opportunity to serve Srila Prabhupada and make history together. One thing that many people connected to ISKCON do not know, is that Srila Prabhupada considered establishing varnashram to be 50% of his mission, and he explained how it is an onramp to the Yuga-Dharma of Harinama Sankirtan (chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra). Another little known fact is that it is actually one of the 6 keys to attaining pure bhakti, as taught by Lord Caitanya to Srila Rupa Goswmai (sato vritte, Upadeshamrita 3); explained by Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur in his treatise, Sri Bhaktalokya.

Varnashram paves the way to chanting...

A Journey of Purification and Sacrifice

ISKCON Campus Ministry, established in 1992 with the GBC's blessings, has been preaching at top American universities, providing chaplain services on those campuses, and establishing student clubs with the view towards eventually recruiting students for our own varnashram college. In 2019 we were invited by Gomatabliss to open the first Bhaktivedanta Varnashram College at the Bhaktivedanta Goshala. For one year, we trained brahmacharis until COVID-19 forced us to go online. Since then, the temple Master Plan Project needed to shift devotees from the gurukul building to the goshala, so space for the varnashram college dried up. Now, in 2025, we are operating online and sustained by Lord Krishna’s mercy and the kindness of devotees. But to truly run the varnashram college we need a physical campus to continue the hands on training that is required.

Overcoming Challenges with Krishna’s Grace

It has to be admitted that every varnashram preacher in ISKCON over the past 50 years, including Srila Prabhupada himself, has witnessed a myriad of challenges in executing this mission, yet hope for this mission shines brighter today than ever before! With ISKCON’s Varnashram Ministry, led by HH Bhakti Raghava Swami, village projects by HH Bhakti Vikas Swami and a number of other gurukul projects - solid progress is being made. Together, devotees are overcoming hurdles, and proving varnashram’s relevance and value to ISKCON leaders and the world through positive and focused action. With your support we can overcome our present biggest challenge of not having a physical varnashram campus.

ISKCON Campus Ministry’s Vision

The Bhaktivedanta Varnashram College will be a model for millions of such colleges that the world urgently needs for transforming the chaos of the world we live in today. Imagine a 5-acre oasis where students are chanting and doing kirtan as dawn breaks over the goshala, organic fields blooming with offerings for Krishna, and young leaders studying Vedic wisdom in traditionally hand crafted classrooms made by the students themselves. Bhaktivedanta Varnashram College will:

Train Leaders: A two-year program for 20 students, granting the Bhaktivedanta Degree, Vedic sciences & arts (e.g., the four vidyas), and leadership skills to spread varnashram globally.
Embody Sustainability: An organic farm and a goshala will teach self-sufficiency and cow protection, rooted in Lord Krishna’s principles.
Inspire Devotion: Immersed in the sacred atmosphere of the campus, students will deepen their Krishna consciousness through daily kirtan and Deity worship.

Why Now? This is An Urgent Mission

We do not have a lot of time.

Global Need: The world needs varnashram’s sustainable spiritual solutions and practical skills that our varnashram college is preparing tomorrow's leaders to implement worldwide.
Time: Time is running out - the clock is ticking on unsustainable urbanization that surpassed 80% globally (EU GHSL) - which will soon force billions of people back to the rural areas to a more traditional lifestyle of simple living.
Info: The problem is that people do not know how to live off the land. That culture is lost. FEMA and the US government estimates up to 90% of the people will die off within the first year of a major collapse of the power grid alone.

The Mission is Calling: Srila Prabhupada's mission is to save the world in this darkest hour and build a house in which the whole world can live. ISKCON Campus Ministry needs to create a model and expand it globally to be ready to meet these people when they arrive - with knowledge and resources they will need to survive.
Land: Rural areas around the world are becoming places of urban development, and the price for agricultural land is soaring. The longer we wait the more the prices increase and the further away we will have to locate the temple, and as a model it should be easily accessible.

Create a Legacy That Will Save the World in the New Era

The Era of the "City Temple" is soon coming to an end - we need rural varnashrama colleges and farm projects - everywhere - ASAP! Now is the time for ISKCON to expand into the rural areas in a big way - before the cities shut down. All it takes is WWIII and a few EMPs and we will witness a global collapse - of the global supply chain, power grids, transport and communication grids and even the Internet - the end of the world as we know it. Everyone needs to get ready to migrate back to the farm.

The biggest open secret is that urbanization is an admitted failure - no one, no economist, sociologist, or politician of any worth has any real faith in the sustainability of urbanization. Yet there is no plan to rescue humanity when our "risk society," that's making its bed in the city on the tips of the branches of the tree of the global supply chain, implodes and collapses in on itself - leaving 80% of the world population economically stranded. This is your story and the story of 80% of the world population - unless you are living self sufficiently in a farm community in a rural area.

No one other than Srila Prabhupada has any plan to save the world from the inevitable global collapse. Srila Prabhupada taught us the common sense that, "Real human habitat is on the farm in the rural areas" and he confirms these eternal spiritual values from Sanatan Dharma culture in this morning walk on May 27, 1974:

Yogeśvara: So then we should begin our communities, our rural communities like New Vrindaban, and then by training up people in the cities, we can send them gradually, as thay are ready...

Prabhupāda: There will be no city. We don't want cities.

Bhagavān: What about our city temples?

Prabhupāda: No, no. For the time it may go on. But as we make progress, there will be no necessity. City means... For the present we have got. Because the city is there, we are there. But suppose the city is closed. We shall be there? If the city is closed, you still will be there?

This mission to save the world in it's darkest hour is Srila Prabhupada’s dream, Lord Caitanya’s mission, and Lord Krishna’s plan for saving the world from the blazing fire of material existence. We are all in it together -- one big family headed by Lord Krishna (vaisudaivam kutumbkham). So let's do it.
